One regret...
As I go through my email and see all the wonderful stuff people sent me to put on the front page, I hang my head. I really wish I'd been able to keep up with my mail, and get everyone up there! Next year, we will find a way to do that. To everyone who I missed, I apologize.

So, this is good bye for this year's blogathon from the Shabbat Schedule bloggers. All together, a lot of money was raised, new friends were made, and everyone got to have fun at the expense of sleep. I want to send a thank you to the sponsors who supported me, my wife for tollorating this, the other bloggers who came by, and the staff who put all this together. I'll be back next year, that's for sure. Once again, thanks to ALL of 'Team Shabbat'. Thanks to our success at pulling thru, FryKitty has announced that Shabbat schedule WILL be official from now on. Next year I'll likely help us Shabbat bloggers have our own chat area from the get go so from start to finish we can all work as one team for our goal. It's been fun, but for now I'm saying farewell to blog land until next year.

So, while ALL the Shabbat bloggers need your sponsorships, ONE has a special challenge. Dreama of Random Again, who is blogging for Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, was offered a special deal by her husband! If she receives more Blogathon sponsors tonight, before the Blogathon ends for her, and the pledge total meets or exceeds $200, he will match the -entirety- of her pledges, dollar for dollar, up to $350. ^^ Now isn't that a charitible husband? Let's make him regret those words! Sponsor Her!

WTHIAB is doing a William Holden thon, with lots of cool info and pretty pictures. Well, pretty if you like William Holden. And who doesn't like William Holden? Go check 'em out!

24 hours and 81 posts later, we have come to the end of the standard schedule for Blogathon 2006.
As always, I got to know some neat people, learn about some wonderful charities, and raise a lot of money.
For those on the Sabbath Schedule, I hope to check back in with you after I've had a few hours sleep! Keep plugging!
For everyone else: goodnight!

And our last winner of the Blogathon is...
Dawn of justdawn! Dawn is blogging for the National MS Society, and has won a $20 sponsorship from Olive Tree Media. Her answer to the question:
I would have to say an absolute and resounding HELL YEAH!
Despite all of my pissing and moaning...this has been a fantastic experience. It warms my pea-pickin' little heart to witness the extreme generosity and kindness of others. You all ROCK:)
Yeah Dawn, me too. Me too.

For those waiting...
This is the point in the 'thon where I get pretty incoherent, and do my best to stop answering any emails or doing anything serious in the database. There were a lot of emails that went unanswered during these last 24 hours because there simply wasn't time. I will get back to each of you over the next day or so. If you have made a pledge you need verified, don't panic--it will not be too late by the time I get back to you. It's all good. You have at least 48 hours to make pledges after the Blogathon.
Thanks for your patience.

Congratulations Mel of Koko.Love, who is blogging for The Gorilla Foundation. She has won a $20 sponsorship from Olive Tree Media for what she likes best about her life:
What I like best about my life right now, is my job. I seriously am happy to get up and go to work every morning. I love my kids, they're my world. They make bad days humorous and fun. And my co-teacher is a wonderful wonderful woman whom I am oh-so-fond of, we get along SO well, it makes our days much more fun than work! I enjoy getting up in the morning and getting there 15 minutes early, and knowing when I arrive "V" will be there with her kids in my classroom, will have been there 5 minutes already and will stay another 5. I love that when my little babygirl comes in she will walk straight to me and grab onto me. I love that one of my little ones is too smart for his own good and sends another child into the bathroom where he can't get back out from, daily (it's evil but SO funny). I also, like that I have a very kind considerate caring respectful loving man in my life.

GAME 16 Winner!
Congratulations to Suzi of The Write Coast, who is blogging for Puppies Behind Bars. Suzi wins a $5 sponsorship for a phobia that will not get her a part in a Hitchcock remake:
What scares me? BIRDS. Alive, dead, real, fake. I can't even stand to look at pictures of birds, or hear their sounds. It's such a deep phobia that even looking at the WORD creeps me out. Was it caused by Hitchcock's infamous movie? No, although that didn't help! When I was a child, we lived in a house surrounded by huge maple trees. Those trees were full of bird's nests. And our yard was always littered with dead birds of varying ages. I didn't like to wear shoes anymore then than I do now. I'd go running through our yard, or down the sidewalk, and C-R-U-N-C-H! Or S-Q-U-I-S-H, if it was a baby. I used to have nightmares in which I was buried in a pile of dead birds, and couldn't claw my way out. Yeah, they make my skin crawl.
I've shuddered almost continually while typing this.

Serge at Dustyhawk :: Broken Mirror wins another one! Serge is blogging for Unicef, and he wins another $5 donation with his wake-up tip:
The clock has stuck 1500hrs at Serge’s zone, his body is aching madly. He wants to sleep.. actually he doesnt feel sleepy, his body is just tired that’s all. Of course if he closes his eye right now, he’ll definitely knock out. So how is he keeping awake ?
Well first of all is by running to the shower and performing the mantra of mantras. The QUICK-COLD-SHOWER mantra, believe Serge when he says this. Go into the shower room turn the tap full blast and let the cold water spray on you. Do not turn it on slowly, and once you turned it on and get sprayed.. immediately turn it off. Take your towel pat dry yourself from any visible water droplets but leaving your body moist.
If you do not have a shower, at the place where you bath…take a bucket and fill it with cold water. Lift it up and pour it on top of yourself. Once you’re done, take your towel pat dry yourself from any visible water droplets but leaving your body moist.
This is the best way to keep awake

I am not one of those people who have lucky underpants, or carry dead rabbit’s feets. I am not a firm believer in luck. I am more a “believer” in karma. From the Spousal Unit, who is now napping...
WebKittyn was the very first to take me up on my offer (which, by the way, is still open -- you can sponsor all day today, and for at least 48 hours after -- but be sure to check whether the bloggers in question have dropped out), so I thought I'd sorta return the favour with a front-page plug (being married to the founder has its perqs!).
First, if you can guess how many energy drinks WK will consume by the end of the Blogathon, you win a $50 donation to the charity of your choice. This one's open to all Blogathonners, and as I write this there are about a dozen guesses up. (I hope one of the lower guesses wins, because that stuff looks toxic to me!)
Second, she's having a random draw from all her sponsors; the winner gets: - Domain registration of any name of your choice (can be private or
public)
- One year of top of the line webhosting chock full of extras
- Installation of anything included in the package if desired
WK is blogging for the Humane Society of New York, so prize or no prize there are worse things you could do with the price of Monday's latte than sponsor WebKittyn.

Marfan Life is blogging (natch!) for the National Marfan Foundation (sponsor link). Marfan Syndrome is a genetic disorder, and it just so happens that the gene in question, fibrillin-1, was discovered (pdf!) by Prof Lynn Sakai -- whose lab is just down the hall from me at the Shriner's research center (for the curious, I work with Peter Hurlin). Lynn was also closely involved in the work that tied fibrillin mutations to Marfan Syndrome. There's a good brief explanation of the role of fibrillin in MS here.
Just thought I'd share, since the 'thon is all about connections between people. (For the record, Lynn's a sweetheart and has been very kind to this junior researcher.)

What I most strive for in life right now is balance. There are so many things pulling at me, wanting me, calling me, depending on me. There are so many things I want to do. The elusive things are peace and balance. Money, health, employment, nonemployment, issues upon issues opon issues.
I don't think you can balance all of that without trying to find a measure of peace.
Balance and peace is what I strive for. As much as anyone else. I wish some people in my life could see how lonely I am without it.

That, folks, is a kind of courage you don't see every day. Rape is a difficult topic, and abusers only profit by an all-too-common tendency to push it away from conversation and contemplation. Brave women like Danielle make everyone a little safer every day. My hat's off.

Congratulations to Adelle of Dell's Diner. Adelle is blogging for National Alliance for Research On Schizophrenia and Depression. She wins a $5 sponsorship for writing about where she lives:
Ha! How do you explain the hole/pit of NYS? Hmmm… Well, I grew up here, which is the only reason I am back here. Let me explain the town I am in. We have Wal Mart. We have CVS. We just got Dunkin Donuts, which goes with Mc Donald’s and Burger King. Most people here don’t have a full set of teeth. There are a lot of 80’s hair do’s (men with long hair in pony tails or mullets, women with crusty bangs). Everyone here drinks beer. High class wine is White Zin.
Even so, there are some real down to earth people here. What you see is what you get. I don’t get looked down at here (if I do, I make sure to make a comment). People are definitely real.

It will be up to the artists whether the mp3s remain available after today, and you cannot get most of these tracks any other way -- they are "demos, home recordings, live recordings, outtakes, remixes, and tunes from forthcoming albums". So go visit already.

There's been some confusion about what, exactly, your subject line should be when you write in for a game. It should be: GAME X, X being the number of the game.
This hour, post a picture of yourself! It can be old or new, just post any old thing with you in it. Send a permalink to games@blogathon.org with the subject line GAME 8. You have 30 minutes.

Game the first!
We'll be playing a bunch of games, having drawings, and giving away tons of sponsorships at Blogathon.org today! Mostly, they'll be games where you post something to your blog and send in a permalink, and I'll draw from the responses. We'll usually play at the :30. Here's the first:
Are you listening to music? Post what's playing right now (me: Snow Patrol, Chocolate). If you aren't listening to music, just say you aren't, with a few words about why (can't wake up the family? hate the stuff?). Send a permalink* to your entry to: games@blogathon.org with the subject line GAME 1. Don't put anything else in the subject, or it won't get where it's going. The winner of a $5 sponsorship will be announced before the next game. You have 30 minutes to submit your entry. Let the games begin!
*No permalink? Just send your URL.

See that "Surf" item on the menu? When you're ready for some 'thonny goodness, click it. It will start you at a random site, and you can surf through the Blogathon. Information, please
Attention Bloggers: there are now three things in your profile for you to edit: direct donation link for your charity, sponsor email customization, and webcam information. Log in and click on Edit Profile to see them.
If you entered this earlier, you may need to enter it again, as we had a bug and had to clear the information.
The details:
First, go to your charity's website and find their donation page. This is the URL you will copy into the "URL of your charity's donation page". This URL will be sent to your sponsors after the event, so they can fulfill their pledges. If you are blogging in Malaysia, you may ignore this field.
Next, add a custom message to your sponsor, if you like. Most bloggers use this to say thank you, as it reaches even anonymous sponsors. Sometimes there are special instructions to pass on to your sponsors, and you can do that here. Malaysian bloggers: this is where you will instruct your sponsors on how to donate to your charities.
Finally, if you have a webcam, enter the URL of the image in the webcam field. We will use that to display your webcam on our portal, and it will include a link to your site.

PUSH!
I'd like to do a concerted publicity push on the next three Wednesdays, starting this week. If we all push at the same time, our technorati rank goes up, and other wonderful things happen.
Here's my thought: find one blog friend who isn't participating, and ask them if they'll post Wednesday. They'll be your "publicity partner". Then both of you do a post about the Blogathon this Wednesday, July 19. Be sure to link the site.
Right now we're linked from 232 sites. Let's double it!
EDIT: Of course as soon as I mailbomb my friends, one of them asks if I have a blurb they can post. Everyone who likes can use this:
On July 29, hundreds of bloggers from around the world will put their endurance to the test for charity, blogging every 30 minutes for 24 hours straight. This is the Sixth Annual International Blogathon, an event that creates a worldwide community for a day, serves up fascinating content, and most importantly, raises tens of thousands of dollars for dozens of charities. Bloggers choose the charity and collect sponsorships. At the end of the event, those sponsors fulfill their pledges directly with the charity.
It's not too late to sign up if you'd like to blog! You can also help by sponsoring a blogger, just check out the List of Bloggers at the site. Stay up late, make a difference.

In 2002-3, talented friends created the key art for the Blogathon website. It was a joy to feature their work, and original art is something I've sorely missed this year. Yes, that clever globe-clock is clipart.
In 2007, I want real art again!
Got chops? Here's the deal: use the contact form to send me a link or links to your work. There's no need to make something special for the Blogathon at this point--I'm just looking for a style I like. If you're chosen, we'll work out the details of the piece. You need not be a participant or sponsor in the Blogathon (so tell your artsy friends, everyone!).
In 2007, I'll use your artwork to design the site and all the accompanying schwag. I'll also feature you in an "artist" section, and promote you from the front page. If you sell prints or would just like some attention drawn to your work, this is a great opportunity to build traffic.
There's no deadline, but I'll probably choose someone before the event this year.

Beware Minimum Sponsorships
The Blogathon is especially good at allowing people to give within their means--a dollar here, five dollars there. It's important that your charity have a reasonable minimum sponsorship. We've seen some charities that won't accept less than $25 via their web form.
So check your charity. If you find they have a high minimum sponsorship, look them up on Network for Good or JustGive, and you may be able to find a donation link with a lower minimum. We'll be asking for a direct donation link later.
Special note to sponsors: while the Blogathon does not have a minimum donation, some charities do. Keep that in mind when making very small pledges.

A Welcome Change
In the past, the Blogathon has required that bloggers raise a certain minimum number of sponsorships before the event. This rule was written back when there weren't as many blogs, and the Blogathon caused quite a bump in readership. It was to prevent people from joining up just to increase pageviews, and to decrease the number of sites we were administering during the event.
This restriction no longer makes sense for the event. People join up to raise money for their favorite charity, and to have fun. These are two things of which we heartily approve, so we have dropped the minimum sponsorship requirement.
Sure, this is going to mean we're administering a lot more sites, but we figure it's worth it.

A note to bloggers: please make sure your charity accepts online donations. Charities in Malaysia are the only exception at this time. Your account may be temporarily suspended if your charity does not qualify.
You can change your charity information on your profile. When you change charities, your account will be put on hold shortly.

We have a serious bug affecting charities, sponsorships, profile changes. Please check this forum thread before contacting us. Add your blog URL to the thread if you are experiencing any of these problems:
--Sponsorships never showing up.
--Profile changes suspending your blog.
--Inability to make changes to your charity.
We are working on fixing this as quickly as possible.

I'm seeing tons and tons and tons of blog mentions from participating bloggers! Wow!
Want to take it to the next level? The one thing that gets more sponsorships for everyone is web publicity. So if your friends have blogs, even if they aren't participating, ask them if they'll mention the Blogathon. Special request for LJ folks: if there's a way that Blogathon could make it to LJ Spotlight, that would be fantastic!
Now, I don't want anyone to spam, just use your contacts. Making a post about Blogathon is a big way someone can help, even if they can't sponsor or participate as a blogger!

Rules, schmules
I'm not a fan of having a long list of rules. I like to keep things very simple and clear. But once in a while, something important comes up that must be added.
Because the public will be browsing the event, and monitors must be able to see every blog, all blogs must be publicly available. If you have a password-protected blog, or a friends-only LiveJournal, it's important to either drop those restrictions, or set up separate page for the Blogathon as soon as possible. Blog information can be changed in your profile.

What time to start?
Many folks are wondering when they should start blogging in their part of the world. Here is a chart of the time in cities worldwide on July 29, 0600 Pacific. I'll be adding this link to the FAQ as well.

Bugs? Errors? Well, possibly...
If you find a problem with the site, be sure to tell us right away in the Bugs and Problems board at the forum.
The forum is also the best place to ask questions about the site if you're confused about how something works. There are a bunch of people there to help, so you get an answer very quickly.
If there's something up with your account specifically (e.g., a question about your charity or your site), drop us a line using the Contact form.
